There's innovation in the Alps.

According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Switzerland is the European country that has filed the most patents in the three leading patent offices around the globe — the U.S., the European Union and Japan. Even better: Seven of the top 10 countries on the OECD's list are in Europe. Japan grabbed the No. 1 spot overall.

Softbank Corp., Japan's third-largest cellphone carrier, is the latest to announce it will sell Apple Inc.'s new-and-improved iPhone on a two-year deal, leaving Canadians wondering why they will be saddled with the longest contracts in the world if they buy the trendy device.

NASA told a Senate panel on Monday that it anticipates losing 3,000 to 4,000 jobs at its launching site once the space shuttles stop flying in two more years, about half the cutback initially reported.
